Preparing for Worlds with Patch 14.18
With Patch 14.17 landing on August 28, Riot made some minor but important changes to several champions. These changes were aimed at reducing the impact of some of the most oppressive choices in the pro scene and a couple of crazy choices that were causing chaos in the solo queue. The focus was also given to adjusting the effectiveness of the key runes for marksmen champions, which have been dominating the meta in higher-tier games.
With Worlds 2024 on the horizon, fans are eagerly waiting for Patch 14.18. As for the specifics of Riot’s plans for the patch, we still have yet to find out, but it seems that we won’t be witnessing a major overhaul as in the previous years. However, do not be surprised if there are specific changes—especially with items and champions to counter the most popular choices for the year’s biggest tournament. Read on for a closer look at what is in store for you.
Patch 14.18 Release Date
Based on Riot’s patch roadmap, Patch 14.18 is expected to be out on Wednesday, September 11. It will be the 18th out of 24 patches that are expected to be released this year and will be critical for the Worlds.
What New Shifts Will This Patch Cause to the Meta?
First, it looks like Riot wants to give some love to some of the less popular AP items while at the same time taking a shot at the ADC items with too much lifesteal. On the champion front, things get even more interesting. Jarvan IV’s passive is going back to the 8% current HP damage, which is the way he was a major meta pick last year. Viego and Xin Zhao are also receiving buffs, which may mean that bruiser junglers are making a comeback as we approach Worlds.
Regarding the nerfs, Nasus, Leona, and Ziggs have been nerfed, mainly because these champions are becoming more popular in the professional level. While these changes appear to be relatively equal, the Nasus nerf brings into question: could this be the final nail in the coffin for him, once more, in the competitive scene?
Mid lane, however, is where the biggest changes are taking place. Aurora, Azir, and Corki are all set to receive some massive nerfs. Azir, for instance, will probably be benched at Worlds because his ultimate damage has been reduced, thus making him less effective. Also, ADCs in the mid lane will be affected; Smolder and the Fleet Footwork rune will be nerfed. This should help reduce the number of double marksmen comps which have been on the rise lately.
