UK Esports Team Committee (UKETC) members have announced a new partnership aimed at addressing the importance of mental health in esports. Eight prominent UK esports organizations have agreed to train psychological first aiders to help players overcome mental health issues and promote well-being.
The participating teams include Fnatic, Resolve Esports, MNM Gaming, EXCEL Esports, Vexed Gaming, Endpoint, Method, and Manchester City Esports.
The psychological first aiders will be trained in collaboration with Play Aid, a non-profit from the UK that is committed to training players in this form of first aid to easily deal with the stressful environment of competitive gaming and streaming. The organization is supported by Movember, a global charity committed to helping men’s health.
The term “Psychological First Aid” is a technique recognized by the World Health Organization. It focuses on providing assistance at early signs of mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and others. The technique was first designed to help relieve PTSD, but it is now used in a wide range of applications, including professional gaming.
As part of the partnership with Play Aid, the UKETC teams will have psychological first aiders trained in their teams to help others overcome possible issues. The teams noted in a statement that they hope to be an example of a focus on improving mental and physical health and that they hope more esports organizations around the world will follow suit.
Dr. John Mills, Play Aid’s Managing Director, commented on the partnership, “We are thrilled to partner with teams within the UKETC to promote the importance of psychological first aid in esports teams. By providing free Psychological First Aid training, we hope to empower esports teams across the world to better support their players’ mental health and wellbeing.”
The partnership with Play Aid is an important step towards addressing the issue of mental health in esports. The high-pressure environment of competitive gaming can take a toll on players’ mental health, and it’s crucial to provide support and resources for those who need it. The inclusion of psychological first aiders on esports teams is a positive step in this direction, and it’s exciting to see leading UK esports organizations take the initiative to prioritize their players’ well-being.
