According to TSM’s head coach, Wong “Chawy” Xing Lei, the team had the lowest budget compared to other LCS participants for the 2023 season. In an interview with Esports Illustrated, Chawy explained that TSM did their best to build a competitive team despite their financial limitations.
While TSM has historically been a top contender in the LCS, their 8-10 record and seventh-place finish in the 2023 Spring Split is understandable given their supposed low budget. The team stuck with Solo, Maple, and Chime while bringing in Bugi and Neo. However, Neo was replaced mid-season by team legend WildTurtle.
“We didn’t have big budget. I think we had the lowest budget. So we actually just tried to do our best… Of course, the first one goal is to try to get top six, but obviously, other teams spend much more, and then we just have to make do with what we have. So for us, it’s always just taking one step at a time,” – Wong “Chawy” Xing Lei.
Despite missing the playoffs, TSM will return for the 2023 LCS Summer Split. The exact start date for the split has yet to be announced by Riot Games.
