The second day of online Counter-Strike in Group B of the Thunderpick WC 2024 was as exciting as the first one. After 3DMAX’s victory in Group A, today’s match was between The MongolZ, Cloud9, Fnatic, and 9z Team for the next round. Now let’s see how the action unfolded.
The MongolZ Top Group B at Thunderpick WC 2024
Before the start of the tournament, The MongolZ were expected to be able to get out of Group B and they did not disappoint as they got out of the group without losing a single map. But it was not always plain sailing. The first match against Cloud9 was very intense and both maps were won by The MongolZ with 13-11. They then backed it up with a good 2-0 win against Fnatic, winning the maps 13-11 and 13-7.
Although the team was great, not all the players had it easy going through the match. Techno had a tough time trying to score but his teammates were eager to take up the mantle. Leading the team was in-game leader (IGL) bLitz who was in top form throughout the game. This win ensures The MongolZ a place in the Playoffs Play-in and puts the team closer to the LAN finals in November.
Cloud9 Cling to Survival
Cloud9 started their journey with a defeat against The MongolZ which put them in a very precarious position of elimination. Their last hope was a decider match against 9z Team, a team that has been quite good in 2024 and reached the Semi-Finals of IEM Dallas. But Cloud9 closed the door on 9z Team’s run with a 2-0 series win, outclassing 9z Team on Mirage and Anubis.
The performance of HeavyGod was the main reason Cloud9 was able to survive. The Israeli rifler was unstoppable, posting an impressive 44:22 statline, and 9z Team had no answers left. Even though 9z’s dgt fought hard, it was not enough to qualify for the tournament in the next round.
The Road Ahead
For now, The MongolZ are through to the next round and 9z Team are out of the competition. However, Cloud9 and Fnatic will have an opportunity to compete for their lives and a place in the Playoffs Play-in.
