Hey LoL players, prepare yourselves! Twitch streamer Marc “Caedrel” Lamont and LEC host Eefje “Sjokz” Depoortere have officially revealed the city and date for The League Awards 2024. This new event to commemorate the best of League of Legends esports will be held in Berlin, Germany on the 5th of December 2024. Though the time has not been revealed yet, the countdown has already begun!
A New Era of League Esports Celebration
The League Awards 2024 is going to be a big deal in the LoL esports scene. This new award show is intended to recognize the best performers, clubs, and personalities in the League. As Caedrel, a former pro player and now a popular Twitch streamer, said, “there was something lacking to commemorate the world of LoL esports at the end of every competitive year.”
Co-founder Sjokz, who will also be hosting the event, said the same, adding that this project has been in the works to give back to a community they both love. The duo officially came out on June 12th on X, which was formerly known as Twitter, and caused a stir throughout the esports community.
No Live Audience—Yet
Even though there will be no live in-person audience at the 2024 event, it is only the start. Sjokz added: “We are financing this ourselves and we want to make sure that everything is as good as it can be for the first edition.” She also assured fans that the event is likely to host a live audience by the next year. In the meantime, all the action can be watched live on Caedrel’s Twitch stream.
Special Guests and Hosts
While the identities of the attendees remain unknown, Caedrel and Sjokz have stated that some of the people in attendance will be recognizable from the League community. The LEC hosts Laure “Bulii” Valée and Jakob “YamatoCannon” Mebdi are expected to be on the stage, and the organizers are trying to invite such personalities as Christian “IWDominate” Rivera. Whether you are a fan of professional players or content creators, this event seems to be promising to be a spectacle for anyone interested in the League scene.
The Esports Awards Controversy and Its Consequences
The introduction of The League Awards is happening at a time when the esports industry is facing some major issues. More recently, the Esports Awards came under criticism after entering into a three-year partnership with the Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF), a charity backed by the Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. Several personalities such as Sjokz and Canadian caster Parker “Interro” Mackay have boycotted the event due to the Saudi Arabia’s human rights record including women and LGBTQIA+ rights.
Given this controversy, it is not shocking to see new awards shows such as The League Awards emerging to provide a new way to celebrate esports. Thanks to Caedrel and Sjokz, this event is set to become a new tradition in the League of Legends competitive schedule.
