The Guard Faces Unexpected Exit from VCT Americas League 2024

In a surprising turn of events, The Guard, the North American esports team that clinched victory at the VCT Ascension 2023 tournament in São Paulo, Brazil, will not be participating in the VCT Americas League 2024 season.

Riot Games confirmed that the league will continue with the same 10 partnered teams from the previous season. The decision comes after The Guard reportedly missed the deadline to agree to the Team Participation Agreement for VCT Americas.

The Guard showcased an impressive performance this year in the Valorant Challengers League (VCL), securing their promotion to the Americas League, which represents the pinnacle of Valorant esports.

Their journey included finishing second in the VCL NA Split 1, third in the VCL Mid-Season Face-Off, and second in the VCL NA Split 2. This led them to the Ascension Americas tournament in Brazil, where they dominated with a 4-0 record in the group stage. Their triumphant run continued in the playoffs, culminating in a grand final victory against M80 with a score of 3-1.

The Guard’s Valorant Team Line-up:

  • Trent Cairns, known as “trent”
  • Michael Bernet, going by “neT”
  • Jacob Batio, alias “valyn”
  • Ian Botsch, nicknamed “tex”
  • Josh Lee, the team’s coach, recognized as “JoshRT”

However, the year was not without its challenges for The Guard.

Earlier in February, the organization underwent significant restructuring, which included unexpected layoffs affecting 29 employees from various departments. The esports organization, owned by Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, which also owns several professional sports franchises, has been rumored to be considering selling their esports franchise slots.

Despite the setbacks and uncertainties, The Guard remains committed to its players.

In response to Riot Games’ announcement, the organization expressed disappointment but affirmed their support for the team as they seek new opportunities. The players, who have represented The Guard with dedication and pride, are expected to continue their legacy of excellence, regardless of the team they represent in the future.
