FlyQuest derailed the 100 Thieves’ momentum in the 2023 LCS Spring Split playoffs with a decisive sweep, thanks in part to a well-executed champion ban strategy. Despite 100 Thieves entering the postseason on a seven-game winning streak, FlyQuest outplayed them with superior teamfighting, macro play, and drafting.
Throughout the three games against 100 Thieves, FlyQuest consistently banned three champions: Lee Sin, Viego, and Rakan. These bans specifically targeted jungler Can “Closer” Çelik and rookie Busio, who had performed exceptionally well with Viego and Rakan, respectively, during the Spring Split.
Closer, known for his impressive play on Viego and Lee Sin, has been one of the team’s top performers. By banning his best champions, FlyQuest effectively limited his impact on the games. Similarly, Busio has shown great prowess with Rakan, winning four out of five games with the Charmer. Banning Rakan severely hindered Busio’s effectiveness.
Closer and Busio accounted for 22 of the 47 team deaths during the 3-0 loss to FlyQuest, according to Oracle’s Elixir. Closer was forced to play Xin Zhao, a champion he hadn’t played this year, while Busio played three games as Thresh. Although Thresh is among Busio’s most-played champions, he had only played one game with Thresh this season.
Upcoming opponents of 100 Thieves may consider implementing similar ban strategies, forcing Closer and Busio onto less comfortable champions. The team’s next match is against Golden Guardians on Saturday, March 25.
