SMOOYA Steps in for OG in BLAST Showdown Quarter-Final as Degster Falls Ill

British AWPer Owen “smooya” Butterfield will fill in for Abdul “degster” Gasanov in OG’s BLAST Showdown match against Ninjas in Pyjamas, as the Russian sniper is sidelined due to illness.

Smooya, a former player for BIG, Movistar Riders, Fnatic, and Into the Breach, has been teamless since the summer of 2022. However, he has participated in Major open qualifiers with mix teams, including the IEM Rio RMR, where he and his Benched Heroes qualified but ultimately could not attend due to visa issues.

OG faces challenges as they lose their star player temporarily, having already struggled to find their footing since in-game leader Nemanja “nexa” Isaković stepped down and Nikolaj “niko” Kristensen joined as a long-term stand-in and interim caller until the end of the Major cycle.

The upcoming BLAST Showdown match is a rematch of the ESL Pro League Season 17 Group C game between the two struggling teams in the Last Chance group stage bracket. In their previous encounter, the Aleksi “Aleksib” Virolainen-led squad claimed a 2-0 victory, eliminating their rivals from the competition.

OG’s lineup for the BLAST Showdown match against NIP includes:

  • Czech Republic: Adam “NEOFRAG” Zouhar
  • Israel: Shahar “flameZ” Shushan
  • Poland: Maciej “F1KU” Miklas
  • Denmark: Nikolaj “niko” Kristensen
  • United Kingdom: Owen “smooya” Butterfield (stand-in)

  • Denmark: Casper “ruggah” Due (coach)
