Smooya’s Ambitious Return to the Top Tiers of Counter-Strike Esports

Owen ‘Smooya’ Butterfield, a well-known figure in the UK Counter-Strike scene, has expressed his determination to climb back to the upper echelons of CS esports.

The former professional player turned full-time streamer has been a free agent since his departure from UK organization Into the Breach in 2022, following a victorious run at the i68 CSGO tournament.

Smooya’s journey in competitive CS has been marked by various stints with multiple teams, though none have been long-term commitments. Notably, he was benched by Fnatic and later by Movistar Riders, events that visibly affected him during his streams. Despite a setback in August 2022, where visa issues hampered his mix team’s participation in the IEM Road to Rio 2022 European RMR, Smooya’s resolve remains unshaken.

In a recent statement on X (formerly known as Twitter), Smooya outlined his strategy for his return, emphasizing a more deliberate approach: “This time I won’t rush by joining already broken projects. I will keep developing with the help of my teammates to become a better person/teammate each day.”

He also invited agencies interested in collaborating to reach out to him, signaling his readiness to ascend to the top tiers of Counter-Strike once again.

Smooya’s esports high point was arguably his second-place finish at ESL One Cologne 2018 with BIG, showcasing his considerable talent.

This, combined with his engaging personality, has garnered him a substantial following, with 269,000 followers on Twitch and 162,000 on X.

Apart from his individual aspirations, Smooya also spoke about his org-less international mix team, The Witchers. Reflecting on their first CS2 season, he expressed satisfaction with their achievements, including winning the first and last HLTV event of the season and a substantial $35,000 prize, which he humorously referred to as a “nice late Christmas bonus.”

As he sets his sights on the RMR Open Qualifiers, the esports community is keen to see if Smooya can emulate the success of fellow Brit Mezii, who has demonstrated the heights achievable through hard work, discipline, and professionalism.

As 2024 dawns, Smooya’s journey in the dynamic world of CS2 esports is full of possibilities.

With his talent, experience, and renewed focus, the path ahead is promising. His story serves as a testament to the resilience and determination needed to succeed in the highly competitive realm of esports.
