Riot introduces verification system for LoL Worlds ticket buyers

Riot Games has implemented a new verification system for the League of Legends Worlds (LoL Worlds) Finals ticket buyers to address the increasing problem of bot purchases. This system forces fans to show that they are eligible through their active Riot Games accounts and League of Legends match history. The change was made after the game developer had to reschedule ticket sales because bots were able to buy up all the tickets.

The new “Finals Ticketing Solution” requires fans to pre-approve their accounts before they can proceed with the buying process. Players must provide the email linked to their Riot Games account on the Finals Ticket Eligibility page and will receive a one-time access code. This code provides access to the ticketing system. The verification window is open from 6 a.m. PT on October 8 to 1 p.m. PT on October 9.

After the verification window closes, players will start receiving their access codes on October 10, and ticket sales will reopen on October 11 at 6 a.m. PT. The AXS sales page will be included in the verification email, but receiving an access code does not guarantee a ticket, only the chance to enter the ticket purchasing process.

Why the Change Happened

Ticket sales for the LoL Worlds Finals will resume on October 11, after controversy over bot purchases disrupted the previous sale.

The second batch of LoL Worlds Finals tickets became available on October 2, but Riot Games had to stop the sale due to ‘high levels of bot activity.’ The developer announced that it would recover tickets purchased by bots after fans complained that tickets were being resold on sites like StubHub for up to ten times the original price. The official ticketing partner, AXS, also facilitated ticket reselling, but often at higher rates than independent sellers.

Riot’s new verification system marks one of the few times a large-scale event organizer has taken proactive steps against bots in ticket sales. Similar issues have occurred in other popular events, such as concerts by artists like Taylor Swift, where scalpers and bots dominate the ticketing lines, leaving fans with few options.
