A Look Ahead at LoL’s 2025 Global Circuit
At the Worlds 2025 Media Day, Riot Games executives unveiled exciting new details about the competitive landscape for next year. Announcements included a new event and the confirmed locations of the three biggest LoL events. Leading the discussion were John Needham, Riot Games President of Esports, Chris Greeley, Global Head of League of Legends Esports, and Paul Bellezza, Executive Producer of League of Legends. Together, they shared insights into the organization of the 2025 season.
Presenting the “First Stand” – A New International Competition
Thanks to the “First Stand,” LoL fans can expect more interregional battles than ever before. This event will feature one team from each of the five major LoL regions, with all matches played in a best-of-series format. Over six intense days, each team will compete against every other region, with a single champion crowned at the end of the event.
One of the most creative aspects of “First Stand” is the “Fearless Draft” mechanism, which excludes champions chosen in previous matches, requiring teams to adapt their strategies. This tournament will take place in Seoul, South Korea, at LoL Park, from March 10-16, 2025, concluding Split 1 of the season.
Mid-Season Invitational – Canada Opens Its Doors for the International Event
The “First Stand” tournament will not provide an automatic qualifier for the Mid-Season Invitational (MSI), but notable changes are coming to MSI in 2025. With the competitive regions now reduced to five, each will send two teams, resulting in a ten-team tournament.
For the first time since the pandemic, an LoL event will be held in Canada. Following MSI, the two strongest regions will gain an extra spot at Worlds 2025, which will have a reduced number of participants—from 20 down to 17 teams.
Worlds 2025 to Conclude in China’s Chengdu
Riot Games also confirmed that the 2025 World Championship will be held in China as part of its extended partnership with Oppo. The Worlds 2025 Grand Final will take place in Chengdu, a city that became a fan favorite after hosting the 2024 Mid-Season Invitational. The grand finale is expected to bring together LoL Esports enthusiasts from both China and around the world.
