Red Bull League of Its Own Shatters Viewership Records in Inaugural Showmatch

The first edition of the Red Bull League of Its Own, a unique showmatch event organized by energy drink giant Red Bull, has made a splash in the esports world, recording a staggering 494,324 peak viewers.

The event, which took place last weekend in Berlin, Germany, has etched its name as the tenth most-watched League of Legends event in history, according to data from Esports Charts.

Held in Berlin’s Velodrom arena, the Red Bull event captivated approximately 7,000 live fans and hundreds of thousands more online.

Its innovative competition format featured League of Legends World Champions and South Korean powerhouse T1, who faced off against prominent European teams like G2 Esports and Karmine Corp. Notably, the event sold out in less than three hours, underscoring its immense popularity.

Beyond its peak viewership, the event boasted an impressive average viewership of 304,000 across its eight and a half hours of broadcast.

The highlight of the tournament was the match between T1 and Karmine Corp, which attracted the most viewers, a testament to both teams’ massive and dedicated fan bases.

In a surprising turn of events, T1, having triumphed against BIG, NNO OLD, and Karmine Corp, faced defeat in the grand final against G2 Esports.

This outcome was particularly unexpected as T1 played each match with different champions from a limited pool, adding a twist to the competition.

Building on its successful debut, Red Bull announced that the event would return in 2024, with the next edition set to take place in Paris, France.

This move promises to elevate the showmatch event to new heights, following the blueprint of its remarkable inaugural success.

The success of Red Bull League of Its Own mirrors that of other recent showmatch events, such as KCX3: Karmine Corp vs The World. Held in Paris by French organization Karmine Corp in September, KCX3 drew around 150,000 peak concurrent viewers online, alongside a significant in-person attendance, across LAN showmatches in four different esports titles.

Reflecting on the event, Sergen “BrokenBlade” Çelik, top laner for G2 Esports, shared his enthusiasm, noting the less serious but competitive nature of the game and expressing admiration for the opportunity T1 had to play in front of such an energetic crowd.

The Red Bull event not only demonstrated the potential of showmatch events to draw viewership comparable to top-tier esports championships but also highlighted the growing appeal of unique event formats and the participation of high-profile esports organizations.
