Rebellion’s Kingsley Brothers Honored with CBE Titles in 2024 New Year Honours List

In a significant recognition of their contributions to the creative industries, Jason and Chris Kingsley, the co-founders of UK-based game development studio Rebellion, have been named Commanders of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2024 New Year Honours List.

The brothers, who established Rebellion in 1992, have been pivotal figures in the gaming industry, with Jason serving as CEO and Chris as CTO.

ImageThe Kingsley brothers, already holders of OBE titles awarded in 2012 and 2019 respectively, have led Rebellion to widespread acclaim, particularly with the popular Sniper Elite franchise. The studio’s extensive portfolio spans across various genres, having published titles for series like Harry Potter, Star Wars, Aliens vs Predator, The Simpsons, Call of Duty, and Delta Force. Beyond video games, Rebellion’s influence extends to publishing books, films, tabletop games, and comics, reflecting the Kingsleys’ diverse creative vision.

Dr. Richard Wilson OBE, CEO of the UK games dev trade body TIGA, expressed his delight at the recognition: “Jason and Chris thoroughly deserve this recognition, given the enormous contribution they have made to the UK video games industry and the impact they have made in other creative industries such as comics, publishing, film, television, and tabletop gaming.”

He also praised the Kingsleys’ commitment to TIGA and their efforts in making the UK a leading hub for video game development. “Congratulations on this outstanding achievement,” he added.

The 2024 New Year Honours List also included other notable figures such as musician Dame Shirley Bassey DBE, author Jilly Cooper CBE, and actor Emilia Clarke.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak commented on the list, stating, “The New Year’s Honours List recognises the exceptional achievements of people across the country and those who have shown the highest commitment to selflessness and compassion.”

This recognition of the Kingsley brothers raises the question: could esports talent be recognized in future New Year Honours Lists?

Despite the growing prominence of esports in the UK, with talented broadcasters, managers, content creators, and players, the sector has yet to see significant recognition in these prestigious awards. Andy Payne, the chair of British Esports, received an OBE for his contributions to the games industry, signaling potential for future honorees from the esports world.

The honours system in the UK, which recognizes public service and contributions to national life, may soon acknowledge the rising influence of esports. With an increasing awareness and appreciation of competitive gaming, the future may well see esports figures joining the illustrious ranks of those honored by the nation.
