MSI 2023: Patch 13.8 Preview for LoL Focuses on Solo Queue Outliers and Jungle Meta

With just weeks until the Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) 2023, the first interregional competition for League of Legends’ Season 13, Riot Games has been refining the game’s meta in preparation for the international event. Following several patches, Riot Games has expressed satisfaction with the current meta and intends to address a few Solo Queue outliers and introduce additional jungle champions in LoL Patch 13.8.

Riot Games Lead Designer Matt “Phroxzon” Leung-Harrison provided a patch preview on Twitter, stating, “MSI Patch 13.8! The meta is looking pretty good overall. We’re adding a few more champs into the Jungle meta and addressing some weak/strong outliers for Solo Q…”

A total of fifteen champions will receive changes in LoL Patch 13.8, with the majority being buffs. Here’s a rundown of the patch:

Champion buffs in LoL Patch 13.8

The following champions will be buffed in the upcoming LoL Patch 13.8, with their win rates in Platinum and above tiers for Solo Queue in LoL Patch 13.7 (current patch) provided for reference:
Nidalee: 49.54% (Jungle)
Lillia: 49.44% (Jungle)
Poppy: 49.99% (Jungle)
Leona: 48.98%
Alistar: 50.09%
Ezreal: 48.48%
Janna: 50.66%
Garen: 48.45%
Kha’Zix: 50.21%
Zoe: 51.38%
Kog’Maw: 50.85%

Phroxzon noted that Kha’Zix’s changes from W evolve to Q were successful but felt he needed a little more power, stating, “Kha’Zix changes from W evolve to Q landed well, but he needs a little more power.”

Nerfs in LoL Patch 13.8
The following champions will be nerfed, along with their win rates in LoL Patch 13.8 in Platinum and above tiers:
Rakan: 52.28%
Jarvan IV: 52.61%
Malphite: 52.23%
Aurelion Sol: 50.43%

All of these champions are currently rated S+ tier.

(All win rates mentioned are sourced from U.GG at the time of writing.)

The only item receiving adjustments in LoL Patch 13.8 is Cosmic Drive.

Though relatively simple and brief, this patch will play a significant role in shaping the MSI 2023 meta.

LoL Patch 13.8 release date and time

Per the official patch schedule, League of Legends Patch 13.8 will be released on April 19th, with the Oceanic servers being the first to receive it. Patch times for other regions are as follows:

North America: 3 am PT
Europe West (EUW): 5 am GMT
Europe and Nordic East (EUNE): 3 am CET
Korea: 8 am KST

Expect approximately three hours of server maintenance and downtime before the patch goes live.
