Mongolian Team Triumphs Over Imperial at IEM Rio Tournament

Despite an early setback, TheMongolz managed to eliminate the Brazilian team Imperial from the IEM Rio event, securing a 2-1 scoreline in the process.

After being outperformed on Overpass (3-16), TheMongolz mounted a comeback on Inferno (16-12) before sealing their victory on Mirage (16-14). This achievement indicates that the team can hold its own against more recognized competitors, despite the community’s initial doubts following the signing of Chinguun “hasteka” Bayarmaa.

The match was characterized by weak CT sides, as each half in the series was conquered by the offense. Imperial began strong on Overpass, with Ricardo “boltz” Prass achieving a 1.96 rating in a highly one-sided map. However, TheMongolz rallied on Inferno, securing an 11-4 half that could have been even more favorable had it not been for two Imperial clutches. The Mongolian team then gradually gained the necessary rounds to force a final decision.

On Mirage, TheMongolz quickly gained momentum, leading 9-4 at one point. However, a late push by Imperial narrowed the gap. Vinicius “VINI” Figueiredo’s 1vs2 clutch reinvigorated the Brazilian side, but their efforts ultimately fell short in the last round of regulation when hasteka daringly attempted a ten-second defuse in a 2vs1 situation.

Meanwhile, Imperial’s journey in the tournament comes to an end. As a last-minute replacement for Virtus.pro, the Brazilian team failed to impress their home crowd, suffering losses to Ninjas in Pyjamas and TheMongolz. This recent performance compounds their woes, as they previously missed out on qualifying for the Paris Major due to defeats against Evil Geniuses and Complexity.
