MinD_ContRoL Criticizes Dota 2’s New Drafting System for Immortal-Ranked Games

In the ever-evolving world of Dota 2, the introduction of new features and systems can often lead to heated debates within the community.

One such instance is the new drafting system introduced in the Immortal bracket with patch 7.33 in December last year. Ivan “MinD_ContRoL” Ivanov, the former offlaner for Nigma Galaxy, has recently voiced his dissatisfaction with this system, stirring discussions among players and fans alike.

On January 3rd, MinD_ContRoL took to Twitter to express his concerns: “Hello guys, the drafting system in MMR is pretty bad, can you fix it or bring the old one back or create a new one? Half of the games are pointless.”

This critique highlights the frustration felt by players over the changes made to the drafting system in the highest tier of Dota 2’s ranked games.

The crux of the issue lies in the shift from the old system, where teams in the Immortal bracket were predetermined by Valve’s servers based on players’ MMR, ensuring balanced matchups between the Radiant and Dire sides. The new system, however, adopts a captain-based approach. In this format, the two players with the highest MMRs in a match become captains of their respective teams and select their teammates from the remaining pool of players.

This captain-based system has led to concerns over team composition and synergy.

Without a role queue, players often mark themselves as versatile, potentially resulting in unbalanced teams. The risk is that a team might end up with multiple players preferring the same position, such as two mid-laners or two safe lane carries, which can adversely affect team performance and be exploited by opponents.

The system has its proponents as well.

Janne “Gorgc” Stefanovski, for instance, supports the captain-based system. As a high MMR player often ending up as a captain, Gorgc strategically drafts players with lower MMRs, aiming to maximize his MMR gain from victories and minimize losses in defeats.

MinD_ContRoL’s critique comes at a time when he is a free agent, having recently departed from Nigma Galaxy. His future in the Dota 2 professional scene remains a subject of speculation, with no hints yet as to his next steps or potential new team affiliations.

The controversy surrounding the new drafting system in Dota 2’s Immortal bracket underscores the delicate balance between maintaining competitive integrity and introducing new dynamics to the game. As Valve navigates these complexities, the feedback from seasoned players like MinD_ContRoL and Gorgc will be crucial in shaping the future of Dota 2’s competitive landscape.
