MDK Supa Looks Back on the Pursuit of the Full Worlds Experience

MAD Lions KOI began their Worlds 2024 campaign on a high note as their roster filled with new faces easily dispatched Vietnam’s Vikings Esports 2-0, which means that one more victory will be enough to qualify for the Main Event.

Following the win, bot laner David “Supa” Martínez joined the media to discuss the games and their approach. The drafts of MDK were similar in both games, with only one change in the five champions.

“We felt really good about our first draft,” Supa said, explaining the team’s confidence. “So we were a bit surprised that [Vikings Esports] didn’t make any adjustments or try to counter it.”

He went on to explain why the team did not feel the need to make many changes between games. “We were happy with our game plan. We did not believe they could come up with an answer to respond to us, so we just continued with it. Also, it is always better not to disclose more of our strategies to the competitors. We are definitely content that we did not have to reveal more cards, and we had confidence in our strategy.”

Supa also discussed his Jinx pick, which they set for both games, though they knew that blind-picking the champion is dangerous.

“Jinx is in a really strong spot right now, especially after the recent buffs,” he explained. “She’s flexible, whether you’re playing with a laneswap or sticking to a standard approach. I really believe she is crazy, I mean, she is broken. It becomes the challenge of teams to determine how they would deal with her. They attempted in the second draft but it failed. Once Jinx gets ahead, she is a monster, and the laneswap was really good for us, so I am happy with how it played out.”

It was special for Supa, who is playing in the international tournament for the first time to play at Riot Games Arena in Berlin. In an interview with Esports.net, Supa was asked whether it felt like just another LEC match due to the familiar environment, and he said that his team made sure to bring the feeling of playing on the world stage.

“We have tried to make it look like we are at Worlds,” he said. “We are in a hotel practicing instead of practicing from the office or from home. It is all about making that Worlds feeling and taking everything Riot offers for the event.”

Supa also said that the hype videos before the Worlds games contributed to the atmosphere and even made him nervous – in a positive way, which only emphasized the significance of these games.
