Mark Zimmerman Named LCS Commissioner as League Returns to Weekend Schedule

The League of Legends Championship Series (LCS), one of the premier competitive scenes in esports, has announced a significant leadership change with Mark ‘MarkZ’ Zimmerman stepping into the role of Commissioner.

Alongside this pivotal appointment, the LCS has revealed its return to a weekend broadcast schedule for the 2024 season, signaling a major shift in response to community feedback.

Zimmerman, a familiar face in the League of Legends community, brings a wealth of experience to his new role as LCS Commissioner. Having served as a coach and analyst for prominent North American esports organizations Curse and Team Liquid, Zimmerman transitioned to an on-air talent member for the league in 2016. His deep understanding of the game and its community positions him well to steer the LCS into its next chapter.

In his statement, Zimmerman expressed his commitment to the LCS, which he has been a part of for nearly a decade.

He emphasized his dedication to enhancing the viewing experience for fans, fostering inspiration within the community, and ensuring the sport’s longevity. Zimmerman will be working closely with Carlos Antunes, Head of League of Legends Esports for the Americas, to develop a revised operational strategy for the league.

“For almost a decade, I have devoted my career to the LCS, and it is with immense honor that I undertake the responsibility of representing the fans, players, teams, and partners in my new position as the Commissioner of the LCS,” said Zimmerman. “As I step into this new role, I am committed to exploring new and innovative ways to create the best viewing experiences for fans, and inspire our community so that our sport can be celebrated for generations to come.”

In a move welcomed by fans and stakeholders, the LCS is set to return to a weekend schedule in 2024, starting January 20th. The 2023 season saw the league experimenting with regular-season matches during weekdays, a decision that met with some criticism from the community. This return to weekend games is part of ongoing efforts to align the league more closely with its audience’s preferences.

The LCS’s transition back to weekends comes on the heels of the league downsizing from ten to eight teams.

In November 2023, two teams, Evil Geniuses and Golden Guardians, exited the league. This followed a proposal from Riot Games that included significant financial incentives and the waiving of outstanding franchise fees, as reported by esports journalist Jacob Wolf.

The league has also acknowledged the need to address a decline in viewership. The LCS Summer Split last season recorded the lowest popularity in the league’s recent history. This shift in broadcast scheduling and new leadership under Zimmerman is part of a broader strategy to rejuvenate the league’s appeal and reconnect with its fan base.

As the LCS embarks on this new journey with Mark Zimmerman at the helm, the league aims to not only recapture its past glory but also innovate and evolve in response to the ever-changing landscape of esports.
