LoL Patch 14.18 – Worlds Patch Breakdown

LoL Patch 14.18 – Worlds Patch Breakdown

As Worlds 2024 approaches, the League of Legends competitive environment will change with the help of Patch 14.18. The previous patch, 14.17, released on August 28, introduced some changes to the main champions that are overpowered in both professional games and normal ranked battles. It was not crammed with huge changes, but the changes were aimed at the picks that performed well and some of the runes used by marksmen in high-ranked games.

With the next patch in mind, Riot Games is adjusting the meta for the biggest League of Legends event in the world. Although we will not see drastic changes such as in previous years, changes in champions and items will still affect the tournament. Below, we explore what these changes are expected to be and what they might imply for the competitive landscape.

Patch 14.18 Release Date

Mark your calendars: Patch 14.18 is expected to be released on Wednesday, the 11th of September. It is the 18th of 24 patches that are expected to be released this year and one of the final large-scale updates before Worlds.

How Will Patch 14.18 Shape the Meta?

Early previews suggest Riot is focusing on two main areas: buffing some AP items that were underperforming and toning down the lifesteal on ADC champions. Since marksmen have remained highly influential in all levels of play, these changes could finally dampen their influence.

Key Champion Changes

  • Jarvan IV: The Exemplar of Demacia goes back to a familiar form with his passive set to 8% current HP. This is a carryover from his meta popularity last year, and we could see him return to the jungle meta for main junglers.
  • Viego & Xin Zhao: Both champions are getting buffs, which may signal the return of the bruiser jungler in competitive play. As Worlds is coming, teams might consider using these champions as solid meta options once again.
  • Nasus, Leona, Ziggs: These three are getting nerfed, mainly because they are becoming more and more popular in professional play. Even though these changes appear to be necessary, there is some worry about Nasus—will this nerf send him back into obscurity again?

Mid Lane Shifts

It is in the mid lane that we are witnessing some of the most dramatic shifts. Aurora, Azir, and Corki are all getting hit, and Azir’s ultimate has been nerfed for a massive amount of damage. This could mean that the Emperor of Shurima will not be a constant in Worlds, thus opening up the mid lane for other champions to take the spotlight.

Double Marksman Compositions

Another change is the Fleet Footwork rune change, which should help to eliminate the double marksman problem that has plagued many teams in both normal and ranked play. Smolder, a marksman that is often played in the mid lane, is also being nerfed, which means that ADC’s reign in solo lanes might be over soon.

Jinx Buff

Not a significant shift, but Jinx is receiving a small boost, which causes some people to raise their eyebrows due to Arcane Season 2. I don’t think it will turn her into a meta pick, but there will be teams that will try to use this buff if she fits into a specific team comp.

Final Thoughts: Expectations of Worlds

As Riot continues to polish the game for Worlds 2024, Patch 14.18 aims at enhancing competitive fairness. ADCs and mid-laners will be affected the most, but bruiser junglers could increase in popularity, and we might see the end of the marksmen-focused meta we’ve been seeing lately.
