In an unexpected turn of events, the former LCS Most Valuable Player and acclaimed jungler, Mingyi “Spica” Lu, will not be participating in the 2024 Spring Split of the League of Legends Championship Series (LCS).
This news comes after what Spica described as “some unfortunate circumstances”, marking a significant shift in the North American League of Legends scene.
Spica, who had a remarkable run with FlyQuest during the 2023 season, finds himself without a team for the upcoming split.
Despite being under contract until November 19, 2024, FlyQuest’s decision to restructure its roster following a series of lackluster performances, including missing out on the 2023 World Championship, left Spica on the sidelines. This reshuffling saw the introduction of European jungler Inspired, leaving Spica without a spot in the team.
Spica’s apex in the League of Legends competitive scene was with TSM three years ago.
After the retirement of legends Bjergsen and Doublelift, Spica took the helm of the team, leading them to a top finish in the regular season with a 30-15 record. His exceptional performance earned him the title of MVP and a spot in the All-Pro first team. However, the team’s inability to qualify for Worlds in subsequent seasons, including his stint with FlyQuest, has been a significant setback for the jungler.
For now, the 22-year-old star plans to dedicate his time to full-time streaming, likely on Twitch, during the initial months of the 2024 season.
He intends to actively seek team opportunities for the Summer Split. Given his track record and high regard in the community, it is anticipated that several LCS teams might extend offers, particularly if new junglers fail to integrate successfully into their respective squads.
Spica’s absence from the 2024 Spring Split roster is partly attributed to the LCS’s reduction from ten to eight teams right before the free agency began.
This move saw Evil Geniuses and Golden Guardians exit the league, resulting in fewer slots for top-tier junglers. This sudden downsizing left players like Spica navigating an unexpectedly tight free agency market.
With the LCS Spring Split set to commence on January 20 under new commissioner Mark Zimmerman and a return to weekend play, the league embarks on a new chapter.
