GOALS, an innovative multiplayer football simulation game, has successfully raised $20 million in a Series A funding round. The round was spearheaded by Seven Seven Six, the venture capital firm founded by Reddit’s Alexis Ohanian. This latest investment aims to expedite the game’s production and expand the current team of 50 to at least 75 members in the coming years.
The project, which began in 2021 under the direction of SK Gaming co-founder Andreas Thorstensson, seeks to compete with popular titles like FIFA and eFootball. GOALS is designed as a free-to-play esports-ready game, with the developers having previously announced a P2E (play to earn) system featuring NFT rewards, although further details have yet to be disclosed.
The funding round also attracted several notable new investors, including Discord SVP Peter Sellis, Statespace Founder Wayne Mackey, LA Galaxy’s Riqui Puig, and Tottenham’s Clement Langlet. Venture capital firms Northzone, Moonfire, and Cassius also contributed to the round.
This investment brings the total capital raised for the project to $39 million (£31.4 million), following a $15 million seed funding round announced in April 2022. Although the game remains in a pre-alpha state with no set release date, the developers have shared in-game videos demonstrating gameplay mechanics and a trailer.
Seven Seven Six founder Alexis Ohanian expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, “The studio is on a mission to bring a fun football game to the masses and to eliminate any barriers or inequities that may exist for players, no matter where they live or what hardware they’re running. It’s been amazing to not only see the progress GOALS has made so far, but to also play it for ourselves.”
