According to esports content creator Travis Gafford in a recent YouTube video, Counter Logic Gaming (CLG) is said to be closing down its operations, keeping only its League of Legends teams.
This news emerged shortly after Gafford spoke with CLG employees who were told they would be laid off on April 6th. Greg Kim, the current head of CLG and former director of Evil Geniuses, is reportedly among those being let go.
Gafford shared that the Madison Square Garden Company has apparently sold off the League of Legends division, which means CLG may no longer continue as a brand or organization. As one of the oldest esports organizations, the future of CLG seems uncertain.
NRG Esports is rumored to acquire CLG’s League of Legends division, which includes both LCS and LCS Academy teams, although the fate of the brand remains unknown. As of now, no official statement has been released by Counter Logic Gaming, which currently hosts teams in Valorant, Smash, Apex Legends, and fighting games, as well as full-time streamers under its brand.
In the LCS Spring 2023 playoffs, CLG’s League of Legends team placed fourth in the regular season but were defeated 3-1 by Cloud9 in the upper bracket and eliminated by Evil Geniuses.
