Dota 2’s MMR and ranking system, while well-established, still has potential for enhancement. A recent discovery by a Reddit user suggests that the Glicko Rating System might be integrated into the game, as indicated by lines of code in the Dota 2 client.

The Glicko rating system, used in games like Pokémon GO, CS:GO, and Chess.com, could impact Dota 2 players’ ranked matches. It introduces an “MMR Uncertainty” that varies the MMR gained or lost in each match. The system can reward smurfs with more MMR to help them reach their appropriate bracket or penalize returning players with higher MMR losses if their skill level has dropped.
Previously, Dota 2 had a similar system that adjusted MMR gains and losses based on the presence of smurfs or significant MMR disparities. With the potential implementation of the Glicko rating system, the matchmaking experience may improve for players by better adjusting MMR gains and losses in various scenarios.
