Concerns Arise Over Korea’s Selection Criteria for LoL National Team at Hangzhou Asian Games

As the postponed 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games prepare to feature esports as an official medal event for the first time, concerns are emerging regarding the selection criteria for Korea’s League of Legends (LoL) national team. The Korean e-Sports Association revealed the criteria, which require players to be above 16 years old and compete in one of the major regions (LCS, LEC, LCK, or LPL) as of February 2023.

The association will consider domestic and international tournament results from 2021 Summer to 2023 MSI, reducing the review period from four years to two. Individual accolades, such as All-Pros, Player of the Game, and MVP awards, will be part of the first review index. The second review index will consider personal stats, including KDAs, DPM, Vision Score, and role-specific stats.

However, Gen.G’s CEO Arnold Hur expressed concerns about the stats-based index, stating that “Using stats as the primary driver for national team selection like they seem to be talking about here is really tough to do, esp. in League. Individually better players on worse teams can get left out because their team-driven stats aren’t good. Very tough problem to solve tho.”

He explained that team-driven stats might not reflect the abilities of individually strong players. Tim Sevenhuysen, the director of esports analytics at 100 Thieves and founder of stats site OraclesElixir, agreed, noting that he would never use LoL stats as the primary pillar for selecting players for a team due to the game’s contextual complexity.

In addition to LoL, Korea will compete in FIFA Online 4, Street Fighter 5, and PUBG Mobile at the Asian Games. The event, postponed from 2022 to 2023 because of Covid-19 concerns, will take place from September 23 to October 8.
