According to esports reporter Jacob Wolf, GameSquare Esports and Enthusiast Gaming have been actively discussing potential buy-ins, eyeing opportunities to integrate their respective teams, Complexity and Luminosity Gaming, into the LCS.
These discussions reportedly revolved around purchasing either an existing LCS slot or an entire LCS team’s organization.
This approach isn’t new to the LCS; earlier this year, NRG made headlines by acquiring the entire CLG organization from the Madison Square Garden Corporation. More recently, Shopify Rebellion purchased an LCS slot from TSM for a reported $10 million.
Interestingly, the talks between these interested organizations and LCS teams were centered on stock compensation. This arrangement would have resulted in the sellers becoming shareholders in the acquiring entity. However, the potential for market corrections made Riot Games’ cash buyout offer more enticing to the current LCS teams.
Riot’s proposal included $6 million in cash, the waiving of any remaining debt, and an outstanding payment for the organization’s share of the league revenue pool.
This offer was compelling enough to attract over half the LCS teams at the time, with 100 Thieves, NRG, Dignitas, Immortals, Golden Guardians, and Evil Geniuses reportedly considering the deal. Ultimately, both Golden Guardians and Evil Geniuses, who were looking to exit, accepted the buyouts.м
