Cloud9’s EMENES Seeks Guidance from Chovy After MSI Loss: Aiming for Improvement and Regional Dominance

EMENES of Cloud9 approached Chovy for advice immediately after their disappointing loss at the 2023 League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational (MSI).

Cloud9, the top seed from North America, suffered a clean sweep with a 3-0 defeat against Gen.G from Korea in the lower bracket quarterfinals. The series was characterized by quick matches, none lasting longer than 30 minutes.

Despite the crushing defeat, EMENES remained optimistic and sought guidance from his counterpart, Chovy, the mid laner for Gen.G. Right after the final game, EMENES asked Chovy for feedback on his weaknesses as a player and how he could enhance his skills. Chovy commended EMENES on his individual laning phase but expressed his inability to fully evaluate EMENES’ adaptability to advantages or disadvantages based solely on the MSI series. Instead, Chovy decided to provide advice on decision-making in various situations and understanding the game from a broader team perspective.

Chovy, with six years of professional League of Legends experience, has played for multiple teams in the LCK and has represented Korea in various international tournaments, including three appearances at the World Championship. He has led Gen.G to three LCK finals, winning the Summer 2022 and Spring 2023 splits against T1.

On the other hand, EMENES has been playing League of Legends for four years, primarily for academy teams or in minor regions. He has participated in LCK Challengers, the TCL, and the NA CL before joining Cloud9 Challengers and eventually moving to the main roster on Feb. 18.

The MSI marked EMENES’ first international appearance, a significant milestone after winning the LCS Spring Split with a 3-1 victory over Golden Guardians in the finals. However, Cloud9 only secured one win at MSI, which happened to be against Golden Guardians, eliminating their domestic rivals with a 3-1 victory in the opening round of the lower bracket.

Cloud9 will now shift their focus back to the LCS for the Summer Split, aiming to defend their title and secure a third consecutive appearance at Worlds. For EMENES, the Summer Split represents an opportunity to establish his regional dominance, as he was previously ranked below Gori from Golden Guardians in the Spring Split All-Pro Teams.

The 2023 LCS Summer Split is scheduled to run from June 1 to Aug. 20, culminating in the finals held in Newark, New Jersey. Cloud9 will once again face off against Golden Guardians in the opening match of the split, giving EMENES the chance to prove himself as the superior mid laner against Gori and send a resounding message to the rest of the league about Cloud9’s enduring regional supremacy.
