2024 LEC Unveiled: A New Era of European League of Legends Esports

Berlin, 2024: The League of Legends European Championship (LEC) is gearing up for an exhilarating 2024 season, packed with thoughtful changes and exciting updates.

From format tweaks to schedule shifts, the LEC is setting a new bar for competitive play. Here’s what fans, players, and enthusiasts need to know about the upcoming season.

New Arena, New Ambitions

The season kicks off in the brand-new Riot Games Arena in Berlin, a state-of-the-art venue that promises to be the new heartbeat of esports in EMEA. This move from the former LEC Studio is more than a change of scenery—it’s a statement of growth and commitment to the future of esports.

Streamlined Competition Format

2024 sees a significant overhaul in the competition format. The Group Stage and Playoffs are merging into a singular, cohesive bracket. This change aims to simplify the follow-through of the competition, enhancing viewer engagement. The bracket will maintain the balance of best-of-3 and best-of-5 series, now with an innovative repeat matchup protection in the Lower Bracket, ensuring a diverse and unpredictable competition.

Thoughtful Scheduling for Optimal Performance

In a move to prioritize player well-being, the LEC has extended breaks between the Winter and Spring Splits and the Spring Split and MSI, each by a week. Conversely, the gap between the Summer Split and the LEC Season Finals is shortened by a week. Additionally, the new starting time of 5:00 PM CET is set to align better with global audience preferences.

Championship Points Revamp

Championship Points (CP) are getting a makeover. While their foundational role remains, 2024 will see an equal distribution of points among fifth to eighth-place finishers per split and increased stakes and points for top performers. This recalibration is designed to magnify the importance of consistent performance throughout the year.

The Summer Split now carries more weight in the race to the World Championships.

The Summer Champion gains direct entry to Worlds as the lowest seed, while the 2nd and 3rd place teams automatically qualify for the LEC Season Finals, irrespective of their CP or previous results.

Starting December 11, a Pre-Season Champions Queue will open on a special server, mirroring the PBE, to allow LEC and ERL players to acclimate to the new patch.

This initiative aims to ease players into the competitive meta, offering a valuable practice ground before the Winter Split commences.

Raising the Age Bar

In a strategic move, the minimum age for LEC players is being raised from 17 to 18. This decision, driven by sustainability and revenue-generation considerations, doesn’t affect the ERL ecosystem, which continues to serve as a launchpad for young talents aged 16 and above.

As the LEC embarks on this new chapter, the anticipation is palpable.

The 2024 LEC Winter Split is more than just a competition—it’s a celebration of evolution, strategy, and the unyielding spirit of esports.
